Participating in after-school programs can improve a child’s academic performance, resilience, and social development. These factors are particularly important for children living in stressful situations

Living with illness or loss in the home brings with it a special set of stresses for children, particularly those who may be too young to understand or verbalize the challenges. Shining Stars after-school activities give hundreds of children in communities around the country a safe, nurturing environment filled with peers and young adult mentors who truly care about them. The program provides stability for youngsters who might be going home to empty houses, supervision, and structure that positively impacts both school and social development.

Shining Stars includes transportation from the child’s school, homework assistance, fun and games, snacks, dinner, and then transportation home. Supervised by Chai Lifeline staff and run completely by community volunteers, Shining Stars is a true partnership between the two.
